Tangut writing served Western Xia
Created about 1036 for Western Xia, a kingdom in northwestern China, the component-based script resembled Chinese writing but served state-building, Buddhist texts, and an identity distinct from neighboring Song China.
A Khara-Khoto manuscript fragment dates to the 12th or early 13th century. Tangut writing continued through the Yuan and Ming periods before falling out of use.
