Why did Tangut writing outlast Western Xia?
It began as a state script and outlasted Western Xia.
Commissioned in 1036 by Western Xia ruler Li Yuanhao, Tangut writing served state-building and a Tangut Buddhist canon. Its system drew on Chinese forms, with earlier Khitan scripts as a regional precedent, but Tangut is a distinct script for a different language. Buddhist texts and translated secular works show its wider use. After Western Xia fell in 1227, Tangut remained in use during the Yuan and Ming dynasties.
