Tangut character 17C67

3176/6136

𗱧 is a Tangut character, but its Unicode label does not give you its word or an English translation. The Tangut script was developed for the Western Xia state and appears in government records, inscriptions, dictionaries, and Buddhist translations. In a modern message, ask for a source or gloss: the shape alone does not tell you what it says.

What 𗱧 means

Its Unicode label does not give its Tangut word or translation.

𗱧 belongs to Tangut, the language and script of the Western Xia state. Tangut writing was created around 1036 for that state. One study identifies an official military-inspector document dated 1072 as the earliest transmitted Tangut document. The script served practical purposes in government records, inscriptions, dictionaries, and Buddhist translations.

Tangut continued in use during the Yuan and Ming periods. Its writing was designed with Chinese writing in view, and scholars have examined a possible connection with Khitan writing. These are relationships between scripts; they do not tell you the word or meaning of 𗱧.

Can you send 𗱧 by itself?

Without a gloss or context, its meaning is not recoverable.

A specialist may identify it in a Tangut dictionary or manuscript catalogue. For someone who does not read Tangut, include a transcription, translation, or the source passage when you use it.

A font draws this character, and Tangut source materials preserve variant glyph shapes. A different design can still represent 𗱧; a font without Tangut coverage may show an empty box.

Best read as part of a historical Tangut text; alone in casual chat, it needs an explanation.

Do not infer a Chinese translation from its shape; ask for a Tangut gloss or source.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𗱧 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Tangut block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.

Why is 𗱧 a box on my screen?

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
