3206/6136

Text symbol

What 𗲅 means

Its code-chart name identifies the character, not its translation.

To identify its reading and meaning, consult a Tangut dictionary or the passage where it appears. Tangut was a script for the Tangut language, shaped by Chinese writing and neighboring Khitan traditions but distinct from both.

Tangut script was created around 1036 under the first Western Xia emperor for state-building and Buddhist purposes, and to express a distinct identity from Song China. Tangut appears in Buddhist scriptures, Chinese works translated into Tangut, inscriptions, and manuscripts. A Khara-Khoto manuscript containing Tangut writing is probably from the 12th or early 13th century. After Western Xia fell, Tangut script continued through the Yuan and Ming dynasties, becoming obsolete by the end of the Ming dynasty.

Why does 𗲅 show as a box?

The active font may not include a Tangut glyph.

𗲅 is text, not emoji artwork. If the font used by an app lacks Tangut coverage, it may show an empty box or another missing-glyph mark. Tangut fonts can draw the same character in different styles; that changes its appearance, not its identity.

To type 𗲅, enter U17C85 with software that supports supplementary-plane Unicode characters. “Tangut Ideograph-17C85” is an algorithmic index name, not a keyboard spelling.

Historical and scholarly: a standalone character still needs Tangut-language context.

“Tangut Ideograph-17C85” is an index label, not an English gloss.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𗲅 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Tangut block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
