What 𗳋 means

The gloss depends on which reference you follow.

A Tangut dictionary links this character to a word for the calf of the leg; a character study gives the same form the verb “to open.”

Why was Tangut writing created?

It gave Western Xia a state script for Tangut.

Around 1036, Western Xia, a state in northwestern China, made Tangut its official script for the Tangut language; scholars also read the move as political self-definition. The earliest surviving example is a 1072 official document. Tangut writing carried state records and translations of Buddhist and Chinese texts, and stayed in use under the Yuan and Ming after Western Xia fell in 1227.

Tangut follows Chinese character-making principles but is a separate script. The neighboring Khitan people had a script around 920; influence on Tangut is proposed, but a close link is disputed.

Why does 𗳋 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
