What 𗴼 means
Its Unicode name is an identifier, not an English gloss.
To find the Tangut word or reading, use the character in its surrounding Tangut text and consult a Tangut dictionary.
Where did Tangut writing come from?
It was created for the Western Xia state.
The Tangut script was created in the 11th century for Western Xia. The earliest transmitted document cited in modern scholarship dates to 1072; an inscribed stone monument at Liangzhou dates to 1094. Western Xia fell in 1227, but Tangut writing continued; a known inscription at Baoding dates to 1502.
Tangut writing served official, private, and religious purposes and expressed Tangut identity. It developed in a writing world influenced by Chinese and is discussed alongside Khitan, another historical script, but Tangut is distinct from Chinese writing.
What does 𗴼 mean if someone sends it?
A lone character gives little context for the sender’s intended word.
Treat it as Tangut writing and ask for the surrounding text or intended reading before translating it.
Historical and technical: it identifies a character from Tangut writing, rather than signaling conversational tone.
Do not infer a Chinese word from Tangut’s Chinese-influenced script tradition.
