What 𗵖 means
A Tangut dictionary glosses it as “a surname.”
The dictionary places it at entry 0131. This is a lexical meaning, not a modern Chinese surname marker or an account of how Tangut names were formed.
The long Unicode-style label identifies the encoded character; it does not translate it. The dictionary entry is a safer guide to its meaning than guessing from the glyph’s shape.
Why was the Tangut script created?
It served a state, a language, and a body of literature.
Around 1036, Emperor Li Yuanhao ordered the script into use as part of building the Tangut state. The project included a collection of Buddhist scriptures and helped distinguish the Tangut state from Song China.
Manuscripts from Khara-khoto, a ruined city in Inner Mongolia, date to the 12th or early 13th century and include Buddhist, Confucian, military, and literary works. Tangut writing drew on Chinese forms and earlier scripts used by neighboring Khitan rulers, but Tangut and Chinese writing could not be read as one another. This historical connection does not give 𗵖 a Chinese equivalent.
Historical and specialist: it belongs in Tangut-language texts and manuscript contexts, not ordinary modern chat.
Do not treat Chinese-inspired structure as a Chinese reading.
