Tangut Ideograph 17D76

𗵶 is a Tangut character linked to “broad” or “wide” in a surviving synonym text. Tangut writing served the Tangut language in state and Buddhist texts. Sent alone in a modern chat, it reads as a reference to Tangut writing, not a shared reaction; “broad” is a useful gloss, not a fixed translation.

Text symbol

What 𗵶 means

It is a Tangut character linked to “broad” and “wide.”

A surviving Tangut synonym text places the exact glyph in a group glossed “vast,” “wide,” “broad,” “coarse,” and “shallow.” “Broad” is a useful gloss, not a guaranteed translation in every sentence. A damaged passage has also been proposed as another occurrence, but its reading is uncertain.

When did Tangut writing begin?

The Tangut script was promulgated in 1036. Western Xia emperor Li Yuanhao established it for state-building, writing in the Tangut language, Buddhist translations, and a cultural identity distinct from Song China.

The earliest securely dated Tangut document is the Record of the Guazhou Trial, dated 1069 or 1070; some undated documents may be older. After Western Xia fell, Tangut continued in Yuan and Ming texts, especially Buddhist works, before becoming obsolete by the end of the Ming dynasty. Its character design drew on Chinese writing and the example of neighboring Khitan writing systems, but Tangut is a separate script for a different language.

Historical and scholarly; alone in a chat, it signals interest in Tangut writing more than everyday conversation.

With someone unfamiliar with Tangut, a standalone “broad” reading will not be obvious.

Questions people ask

3

Is 𗵶 Chinese?

No. It belongs to Tangut, a separate script for writing the Tangut language. Its design drew on Chinese writing, but the script and language are distinct.

Why does 𗵶 show as a box?

The font or text renderer lacks Tangut support. 𗵶 is text drawn from a font, so a font with Tangut coverage should display it; the character itself has not changed.

Can I send 𗵶 to a boss?

Usually not as a standalone message. Without shared knowledge of Tangut, it is hard to read and may look like a test string. A plain-language explanation works better.
