What 𗷅 means
Its Tangut dictionary gloss is “curtain.”
Tangut characters write the Tangut language through combinations of components; they are not picture clues. In a Buddhist manuscript dated to the 12th–15th century, 𗷅 occurs in a transliteration sequence, where it represents a sound. Read its surrounding text: the standalone gloss does not settle every use.
Why was Tangut writing created?
It gave Western Xia a written tool for government and religion.
Western Xia put Tangut writing into official use in 1036, using it for administration and to express political independence from Song China. The script also carried Buddhist scriptures and translations of Chinese and Tibetan works. This is the script’s official rollout date, not a birth date for 𗷅.

Questions people ask
1Is 𗷅 a Chinese character?
No. Tangut script was inspired by Chinese writing, but it records the Tangut language. A Buddhist transliteration may use a character for its sound; that does not make it Chinese.

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
