What 𗷦 means

It is a Tangut verb meaning “to overflow.”

Li Fanwen’s Tangut–Chinese dictionary gives that meaning; 𗷦 is also listed in the historical Tangut dictionary called Sea of Writing. The script, also known as Xixia writing, was created under the first emperor of Western Xia around 1036 to write Tangut, a language spoken in what is now northwestern China from the 11th to the 16th century.

Tangut appears in official and private texts, books, Buddhist scriptures, inscriptions, and manuscripts. After Western Xia fell, the script remained in use under Yuan and Ming rule before becoming obsolete. Scholars rediscovered it in the late 19th century and deciphered much of it in the early 20th century, notably through Nikolai Nevsky’s work.

Is 𗷦 Chinese?

No; 𗷦 belongs to Tangut, a separate writing system for a different language.

Tangut characters have square forms that can resemble Chinese characters, but the resemblance is visual. Tangut is its own script, so Chinese readings and meanings do not apply to 𗷦.

What does it mean if someone sends 𗷦 alone?

Without Tangut knowledge, you need a short explanation to read it.

A Tangut specialist may recognize the dictionary word “to overflow”; other recipients may see an unfamiliar historical character. Add a brief explanation when the meaning matters.

Historical and scholarly; using it can signal interest in Tangut texts to a recipient who knows the script.

It resembles Chinese writing, but it belongs to Tangut.
