Tangut character 𗹬

3693/6136

𗹬 is a Tangut character glossed as “passion” in a dictionary and used for cognition or consciousness in Buddhist texts. It belongs to the Tangut script created for the Western Xia state; if it arrives alone, ask for its textual context before choosing a gloss.

What 𗹬 means

It can mean “passion” or “consciousness,” depending on context.

A Tangut dictionary glosses it as “passion”; Buddhist texts use it for cognition, matching 識 (“consciousness”) in parallel Chinese wording. The surrounding text decides which English gloss fits.

A state script with a Buddhist purpose

Emperor Li Yuanhao of Western Xia ordered the Tangut script in 1036 to support state-building, a written identity distinct from Song China, and translation of the Buddhist canon—a collection of Buddhist scriptures. Tangut books also translated Confucian, military, encyclopedic, and literary works.

An official document dated 1072 is the earliest transmitted Tangut text identified in scholarship. Western Xia fell in 1227, but the script continued: surviving inscriptions at Juyongguan date to 1345, and a pillar at Baoding to 1502. Tangut drew on Chinese writing principles and the Khitan script, another regional writing system; it is not Chinese text in a different font.

Someone sent me 𗹬—what does it mean?

Treat it as Tangut text until you know its source.

A message with 𗹬 may be a quotation, study reference, or historical design. If someone means “passion” or “consciousness,” ask what text it comes from; the character alone cannot decide.

Historical and scholarly; in a message, it signals Tangut text or a deliberate reference to it.

Without its source text, “passion” and “consciousness” are both guesses.

Why is 𗹬 a box on my screen?

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
