Text symbol

What 𗺛 means

A Tangut dictionary glosses it as a kind of grass.

The gloss gives no exact species.

Why did Xixia use Tangut writing?

It gave Tangut a state script and marked autonomy.

Chinese histories credit different creators: the Song history names ruler Yuanhao, while the Liao history names his father Deming. Yuanhao's court put the script into official use in 1036. The script used Chinese-style square forms to write Tangut; 𗺛 is not a Chinese character.

After Western Xia fell in 1227, Tangut writing continued in Buddhist texts; a stone inscription dated 1502 is a later example.
