What 𗺻 means

A dictionary gloss links 𗺻 to a grass name.

A study published in 2023 lists it as entry L3339 and gives “1hya” as a reconstruction of its Tangut reading. “Grass name” is a gloss, not a sentence translation; nearby Tangut text is needed to see its precise role.

It belonged to a working literary script

Created in 1036 under Tangut ruler Li Yuanhao, the script served state-building. It likely helped distinguish Tangut political identity from the neighboring Song state and supported plans for a Tangut Buddhist canon. A fragment of a handwritten Tangut book from Khara-Khoto probably dates to the 12th or early 13th century, showing the script in book culture.

Surviving works include Buddhist and Confucian texts, medical and military writing, primers, encyclopedias, and literature. They were written by hand and printed, sometimes with movable type. Tangut script drew visual inspiration from Chinese writing, and its makers had the earlier example of Khitan script-making; Tangut is a distinct writing system, not a form of Chinese writing.

Historical and scholarly; this character belongs in discussion of Tangut texts or language.

Alone, it has no sentence context to settle its exact role.

Questions people ask

3

Why is 𗺻 showing as a box?

A missing Tangut-capable font is the usual cause. The font must be available to the browser or app displaying it; a web font on one page may not supply it to another app.

Can I type 𗺻 with a Chinese keyboard?

Usually not. Dedicated Tangut input methods use stroke codes or reconstructed Tangut readings, rather than Mandarin pinyin.

Is 𗺻 a Chinese character?

No. Tangut drew visual ideas from Chinese writing, but it has its own character inventory and a distinct script.
