What 𗻶 means
It means “calamity” or “disaster” in Tangut.
The reconstructed Tangut reading is written ²hoq₁ in scholarly notation; it represents an estimated historical pronunciation.
A manuscript vocabulary list places 𗻶 before 𗲩, “to curse.” Together, the glosses suggest “to curse with calamity,” but that combined reading is marked unattested.
Is 𗻶 Chinese?
No. It belongs to the Tangut script, a separate writing system.
The Tangut script was created under Western Xia’s first emperor around 1036 for official and cultural writing. It continued in later texts before falling out of use. Its characters resemble Chinese writing, but the scripts are distinct.
