What 𗼡 means
Gong glosses 𗼡 as “single.”
In a study comparing Tangut and Chinese characters, Hwang-cherng Gong also compares its meaning with Chinese 隻, “one” or “single.” The label “Tangut Ideograph-17F21” is a Unicode identifier, not a translation.
The Tangut script was promulgated around 1036 for writing Tangut under Western Xia ruler Li Yuanhao, who asked his adviser Yeli Renrong to prepare handwriting models. Its forms were modeled on Chinese regular writing, but it is a separate script. It served state and Buddhist writing. Many surviving sources are Buddhist materials from the late 12th and 13th centuries. Tangut writing continued after Western Xia fell in 1227. As of 2025, the latest datable Tangut materials known are Buddhist pillars erected at Baoding in 1502.
Why does 𗼡 show as a box?
The font may not include Tangut characters.
A font needs Tangut coverage to draw 𗼡. If the app or system falls back to a font without it, the character may appear as a square or blank space. Select a Tangut-capable font in the app or system to see its glyph.
A specialist historical-script character, most at home in Tangut study, translation, typography, or history.
The Unicode label is an ID, not the gloss “single.”

1Why does 𗼡 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
