What 𗽝 means
Here it records sound, not a Chinese meaning. Scholars reconstruct its reading as *kiwa (roughly “kee-wah”), for 瓜 in 瓜州. The second character, 𗉔, represents 州, “prefecture.”
How did Tangut writing develop?
Tangut was a distinct state script shaped by its neighbors. In 1036, Li Yuanhao ordered it for state-building and Tangut identity; scholars think a Tangut Buddhist canon was a main purpose. Its design drew on Chinese writing, and Tangut rulers followed earlier Khitan script-making. A place-name list in Western Xia law-code material from 1149–1169 records this spelling; the latest known inscription dates to 1502.
Why might 𗽝 show as a box?
A Tangut-capable font is needed. Without one, a device may show a box or blank; that is missing glyph coverage, not the character’s design.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𗽝 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
