What 𗽢 means
In Tangut, it means “branch.” Scholars reconstructed its spoken form because Tangut is extinct.
Created around 1037 for Western Xia, Tangut writing served Buddhist translations, legal texts and codes, Confucian works, and original writing. Surviving manuscripts cluster from the mid-11th to early 13th centuries; a known inscription dates to 1502.
Is 𗽢 Chinese?
No. Tangut is a separate language and script. Its writing borrowed Chinese-style strokes and drew on Khitan writing, another script. The Chinese character 枝 also means “branch” and is historically linked to 𗽢, but cannot replace it.
It marks historical Tangut or Western Xia writing.
Chinese 枝 shares the meaning “branch”; it cannot replace 𗽢.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𗽢 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
