What 𗿟 means
Tangut dictionaries gloss this glyph as “deep pool.” Scholars transcribe its reconstructed reading in Latin letters as miu. The surrounding Tangut text supplies its role in a sentence.
The Tangut script developed under Western Xia’s first emperor around 1036 for government and cultural life. Western Xia was a Tangut state in what is now northwestern China. Tangut writing served Buddhist translations, legal and administrative work, and private works. It took shape in an East Asian setting influenced by Chinese and Khitan writing, while remaining a distinct script.
After Western Xia fell in 1227, Tangut writing continued in Yuan and Ming settings; the latest known inscription is dated 1502.
Why does 𗿟 show as a box?
A font without Tangut coverage cannot draw the glyph. Unicode assigns the character an identity; fonts supply its shape. A browser page with a Tangut web font may show it even while another app, using a different font, displays a missing-glyph box.
What does it mean when someone sends 𗿟 alone?
It identifies the character, not the sender’s reason. It could be a quotation, a manuscript sample, or a font check. The character alone does not tell you which; ask for context if the message matters.
Historical and specialist; it belongs in Tangut texts, historical study, or conversations where both people know the script.
A lone glyph gives you its identity, not the sender’s reason.
