Tangut character 17FF7

4088/6136

𗿷 is a Tangut character; its number-based Unicode label cannot tell you its word or sound. Western Xia used Tangut writing for its language, and a bilingual stele erected in 1094 includes this exact glyph. Today, the practical hurdles are entering it and getting a Tangut font to display it.

What 𗿷 means

Its label identifies the character, not its word or pronunciation.

Tangut is the historical script used for the Tangut language. Western Xia developed it in the 11th century for official, private, and religious writing. Unicode forms Tangut character labels from code-point numbers, so this one identifies the entry but gives no translation or pronunciation; those depend on a Tangut dictionary and the surrounding text.

An official military document dated 1072 is the earliest transmitted Tangut document identified in modern scholarship. A transcription of the bilingual Liangzhou Ganying Pagoda stele, erected in 1094, also contains this exact glyph.

Why did Western Xia create Tangut writing?

To write the Tangut language for the state and its communities.

Tangut took shape in a Chinese writing environment but is a distinct script. It served state records, private texts, Buddhist and other religious works, inscriptions, and manuscripts. Historians discuss it alongside Khitan and Jurchen, two other scripts developed under Chinese influence; that is historical context, not a shared identity with Chinese characters.

Tangut continued under Yuan and Ming rule after Western Xia fell to the Mongols in 1227, then became obsolete by the end of the Ming dynasty. Scholars rediscovered it in the late 19th century. Its role shifted from working script to evidence for studying Tangut history and language.

How do I type Tangut?

Use a Tangut input method; font support determines whether it displays.

In 2025, Tangut IME Online, an input-method tool, described reverse lookup from an English definition, handwriting, and code entry. Its code route required adding a compatible dictionary file (dict.yaml) for the RIME input method; that setup was specific to the tool, not a universal keyboard shortcut.

The same 2025 tool offered Noto Serif Tangut and Tangut Yinchuan Beta fonts, and warned that other mobile apps might show Tangut text as boxes. A box usually means the app cannot find a font for this character; it does not change the text.

A font or app fallback is failing. In 2025, Tangut IME Online warned that other mobile apps might not render Tangut text; a PC with a Tangut font could display the same character.
