Tangut ideograph 18008

𘀈 means “to give a speech” in Tangut, the historical language of the Xixia (Western Xia) state. Its distinct script drew on Chinese and Khitan writing and carried Buddhist translations and other books. Today it needs a Tangut-capable font; sent alone, it gives most readers little context.

What 𘀈 means

It means “to give a speech” in Tangut. Li Fanwen’s 2008 Tangut–Chinese dictionary lists 𘀈 as entry 3898 with that gloss. The number locates the dictionary entry; the Unicode label identifies the encoded character but does not translate it.

Tangut was the language of the Western Xia, also called Xixia. Its script was promulgated in 1036; a surviving manuscript example probably dates from the 12th or early 13th century. Those dates place the script in history, not the first known appearance of 𘀈 itself.

Why does Tangut look like Chinese?

Tangut writing borrows from Chinese and Khitan, but is its own script. The Western Xia court promoted a distinct script for its language and state. Its designers drew on Chinese and Khitan writing traditions, but the characters form a separate system; a Chinese reader cannot simply read them.

Tangut books included Buddhist texts and translations from Chinese and Tibetan, alongside Confucian classics, encyclopedias, military works and literature. Use continued after the Western Xia period: inscriptions from later Yuan and Ming periods survive, and ScriptSource dates the wider script through 1502.

What does 𘀈 mean when someone sends it?

A bare 𘀈 gives little dependable social meaning. A Tangut scholar or translator may read the historical verb “to give a speech”; without Tangut context, other recipients may not know what it says. Ask what the sender meant instead of guessing at a mood.

If 𘀈 displays as a box, the font may lack Tangut coverage. The text can still contain the exact character even when the device cannot draw its shape.

Historical and specialist; sent alone, it may be unreadable without Tangut knowledge.

Without Tangut context, ask what the sender means; a mood reading would be a guess.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𘀈 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Tangut block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
