What 𘁸 means
It is Tangut writing; its Unicode label is not a translation.
The assigned name follows an inventory pattern. It identifies this entry, but does not supply the Tangut word's translation or pronunciation.
why was the Tangut script created?
To write the Tangut language for the Western Xia kingdom.
The Western Xia court created the script around 1036 for government and literature, and to translate Buddhist texts. Tangut writing appears in official documents, books, Buddhist scriptures, inscriptions, and manuscripts.
Tangut writing continued under Yuan and Ming rule, then became obsolete by the end of the Ming dynasty. As of 2026, it appears in historical scholarship, manuscript study, dictionaries, fonts, and digital text.
why does Tangut show as a box?
A Tangut-capable font may be missing.
Rendering can differ between browser pages and other apps: a web page may load its own font, while another app still lacks Tangut coverage. The character itself is unchanged; the missing font affects only how it is displayed.
Its established setting is historical writing and scholarship; reading it as a word requires knowledge of Tangut.
Out of context, it may register only as an unfamiliar Tangut character, not as a shared message.
