What 𘂇 means
The Western Xia court introduced the Tangut script in 1036 for official records and Buddhist translations. Its characters took visual cues from Chinese writing, and the project followed the earlier example of nearby Khitan kingdoms, which had made scripts for their own language. Tangut writing recorded Tangut, not Chinese.
The Record of the Guazhou Trial (1069 or 1070) is among the earliest securely dated Tangut texts. After Western Xia fell in 1227, Tangut writing continued under the Mongol-led Yuan dynasty: Buddhist books and a Tangut inscription on a 1345 monument at Juyong Pass, north of Beijing, show it outlasted the kingdom.
