Tangut Ideograph 1810D

4366/6136

If your system offers hexadecimal Unicode input, enter 1810D; the shortcut varies by system. 𘄍 is a Tangut character with a reconstructed reading roughly “m, then b, then an open a.” In Buddhist transcription it can represent Sanskrit ba, as in vajra. If it displays as a box, your font may lack Tangut support.

What 𘄍 means

If your system offers hexadecimal Unicode input, enter 1810D.

The shortcut varies by operating system. Font coverage affects the display: without a Tangut font, the character may appear as a box, and fonts can draw its strokes differently.

What does 𘄍 mean?

It marks a Tangut sound, not a whole word.

Its reconstructed Tangut reading is mbɑ—roughly m followed by b and an open a; other reconstruction systems give mba and bja. In Buddhist inscriptions at Juyong Pass from 1342–1345, it represents Sanskrit ba in vajra and svabhāva.

Read it as part of the surrounding Tangut text; by itself, it does not translate as one English word.

Why was Tangut script made?

It served state-building, Buddhist translation and Tangut identity.

Tangut was the language of the medieval Western Xia state. Commissioned in 1036, the script supported state-building and a Tangut Buddhist canon—a collection of Buddhist scriptures—alongside an identity distinct from Song China. It also carried Chinese classics, encyclopedias, military works and literature.

A Tangut manuscript leaf from Khara-khoto probably dates to the 12th or early 13th century. Buddhist material continued into the Yuan period after Western Xia fell in 1227. The script drew on Chinese writing principles and followed earlier Khitan script-making, but it was its own script.

Archival and specialist; it belongs in Tangut texts and scholarship on Tangut or Buddhist transcription.

It represents part of a Sanskrit transcription, not the whole word vajra.

Questions people ask

2

Why does 𘄍 appear as a blank box?

A font without Tangut coverage can leave it as a box; different fonts can also draw its strokes differently.

Does 𘄍 mean “vajra”?

No. In a Tangut Buddhist transcription, it represents the Sanskrit syllable ba within vajra; the single character is not the whole word.
