tangut ideograph-181ae

Tangut Character 181AE

𘆮 is a Tangut character from Xixia, a script shaped by Chinese writing and created around 1036 under Western Xia’s first emperor to write Tangut. “TANGUT IDEOGRAPH-181AE” is an inventory label, not a translation. It endured the Mongol conquest through the Yuan and Ming, fell out of use by the end of the Ming dynasty, then was rediscovered in the late 19th century and largely deciphered in the early 20th century.

What 𘆮 means

It can change the drawing, not the encoded character. Tangut sources preserve variant glyph shapes, so two fonts can draw the same encoded character differently.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𘆮 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
