Tangut Character 181BF

4544/6136

𘆿 is a Tangut character, but its meaning is uncertain. A scholarly index records its reconstructed reading in Latin letters as wow—a proposed pronunciation, not the English exclamation or a translation. Tangut was the language of Western Xia (Xixia); its script resembles Chinese writing but is a separate system.

What 𘆿 means

It outlasted the dynasty, then became obsolete.

The script was created under Western Xia’s first emperor around 1036 to write Tangut. During Western Xia, it served official writing and translations of Chinese and Buddhist texts. After Western Xia fell to the Mongols, it continued in use during the Yuan and Ming dynasties, but was obsolete by the end of the Ming.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𘆿 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Tangut block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
