What 𘇷 means
A Tangut verb glossed “to boil silk.”
The character’s strokes do not picture the process.
Why did Western Xia create Tangut?
To give the Tangut language a written form.
Created around 1036 under Western Xia’s first emperor, Tangut served government, private, and Buddhist writing. It continued under the Yuan and Ming, becoming obsolete by the end of the Ming dynasty. Scholars rediscovered it in the late 19th century and deciphered it in the early 20th century.
Its square forms resemble Chinese characters, but Tangut is a separate script for another language.
