Tangut Ideograph-1820E

𘈎 is a Tangut character for “brother” in language used by male speakers. It usually appears as part of a compound; with 𗤾, it forms 𗤾𘈎, a collective term for “brothers.” Scholars do not agree that the two characters mark a simple older-versus-younger distinction.

What 𘈎 means

“Brother” is the safe gloss; the precise age nuance is unsettled.

In Tangut kinship vocabulary, it means “brother” in terms used by a male speaker. Older descriptions differ: some distinguish older from younger brother, while others treat one form as collective. A 2025 study argues that 𗤾 can mean either an older or younger brother and that 𘈎 usually appears as a bound part of a compound. “Brother” is the safer gloss for this glyph alone.

Why was the Tangut script created?

It served the Western Xia state and carried religious and other texts.

One account dates Emperor Li Yuanhao’s order to create the Tangut script to 1036; another credits the design to a figure called Teacher Iri in 1037. The script drew on Chinese and neighboring Khitan writing traditions while remaining distinct. It helped mark the Western Xia state, also called Xixia, as politically separate from Song China.

A Tangut translation of a Chinese work survives in a Khara-khoto manuscript probably from the 12th or early 13th century. Tangut writing also carried Buddhist texts, legal works and other translations.

Someone sent 𘈎 — what should I read into it?

Treat it as a Tangut reference; ask for context.

In a discussion of Tangut writing, it can point to kinship or a historical text. In an ordinary message, the glyph alone does not tell you whether the sender means the character itself or the compound 𗤾𘈎; ask for a gloss.

Historical and specialist; a modern message needs Tangut context to read as kinship.

Without Tangut context, the recipient may not understand the kinship meaning.

Questions people ask

2

Does 𘈎 mean older or younger brother?

Neither age label is secure. It is glossed “brother” for a male speaker; a study of Tangut texts argues that the distinction between 𗤾 and 𘈎 is not a simple older-younger split.

Why does 𘈎 show as a square?

The font in use may not include Tangut characters. A Tangut-capable font can display it, but each app needs its own font support; a browser fix may not carry over to another app.
