Why was the Tangut script created?

Written Tangut carried Buddhist scriptures, translations from Chinese and Tibetan, Confucian and military works, encyclopedic texts, and literature. A Khara-Khoto Tangut manuscript fragment, probably from the 12th or early 13th century, shows the script in use.
As of 2026, digital font projects and input methods are adapting Tangut for study and type design.
