What 𘉾 means
A Tangut dictionary index links it to Chinese 嶼, “islet” or “island.”
That is a practical gloss, not a complete account of every use. Tangut pronunciation is reconstructed from historical evidence, and scholars record different readings, so the gloss is more dependable than guessing a spoken form.
Around 1036–1037, Tangut writing was created under imperial orders for government and to prepare a Buddhist canon, a collection of scriptures. It drew on Chinese writing and the neighboring Khitan writing system but was designed for the Tangut language. It appears in Buddhist texts, law codes, official documents, and translations. About the 12th century, the Tangut rhyme dictionary Wenhai (“Sea of Writing”) lists 𘉾 at 66.162. After ordinary use ended, manuscripts and dictionaries preserved the script; As of 2026, type design and OCR work also connect Tangut with digital text.
Someone sent me 𘉾—what should I assume?
A lone glyph gives little clue about why it was sent.
If the sender gives no surrounding text, ask what passage, dictionary, or project it comes from. A dictionary gloss cannot reveal why they chose this particular Tangut character.
As of 2026, an app or font without Tangut coverage may show an empty box or a fallback glyph. That is a rendering problem, not a different character.
Specialist and historical: outside a Tangut text or study context, this character needs a gloss to be understood.
A box on screen usually signals missing Tangut font coverage; it does not mean 𘉾 is broken.
