Tangut “guard” character

4744/6136

In Tangut, 𘊇 means “to guard.” In Western Xia place-names, it can write a Chinese sound instead, so context shows whether it is a word or part of a name.

Text symbol

What 𘊇 means

“To guard” in Tangut; in names, it writes Chinese sounds.

A Western Xia law-code fragment—a page from a set of laws—uses 𘊇 for the sound of 尚 and 昌, not their meanings.

The Western Xia state created Tangut writing around 1036–37 for records, education, and translation. Its oldest surviving document is an official message from 1072. Khitan script may have influenced it; scholars debate this.
