What 𘌹 means
Li Fanwen’s dictionary gives it the meaning “west.”
The scholarly reconstruction writes its reading approximately as tọ. Since Tangut is extinct, this is an estimate, not a directly heard pronunciation.
The Western Xia (Xixia) state brought the Tangut script into use in 1036 under ruler Li Yuanhao, to write Tangut for administration and correspondence. Buddhist translations and other written sources continued after the state fell in 1227.
How do I type this Tangut character?
Use a Tangut lookup or input method.
For repeat entry, use a Tangut lookup tool instead of guessing from the character’s shape.
This character sits outside Unicode’s basic multilingual plane, so some older editors may mishandle it. It also needs a Tangut-capable font; reference glyphs are not prescriptive, so supported fonts may draw 𘌹 differently.
Historical and specialist; understanding “west” depends on knowing Tangut or seeing a translation.
A reader without Tangut context may not recognize it as “west.”
