What 𘏙 means
In Tangut, it means “to wipe off.”
Western Xia promulgated Tangut writing in 1036 for its own language and state. Chinese writing shaped its square characters. The neighboring Khitan kingdom had two scripts earlier, a precedent for Tangut.
A legal record dated around 1070/71 may be the oldest known Tangut text. Later books carried Buddhist scripture and secular translations from Chinese; a stone inscription dated 1502 shows Tangut writing persisted past Western Xia’s fall in 1227.
