What 𘐡 means
Li Fanwen’s entry gives “order” as its short gloss. The dictionary indexes 𘐡 as L5379 and gives a reconstructed reading, tśjɨ—a scholarly estimate of its historical pronunciation. A British Library manuscript, Or.12380/3911, adds a pronunciation note in Tibetan; it records sound rather than another meaning.
The Tangut script was created in 1036 under Emperor Li Yuanhao for the Western Xia state, to support a distinct Tangut identity and translate Buddhist scriptures. It drew on Chinese writing, but remained a separate system; neighboring Khitan states had also created distinct scripts. Tangut books included Chinese translations and secular texts. Surviving manuscripts from Khara-khoto probably date from the 12th or early 13th century.
