Tangut character 𘑏

5200/6136

𘑏 is a Tangut character glossed as “to wait upon”—to attend or serve someone. It belongs to the writing system developed for the Xixia (Western Xia) state; Chinese writing influenced that system, but this character is Tangut. If it appears as a box, the font likely lacks Tangut coverage.

What 𘑏 means

It names a word meaning to attend or serve someone. In Li Fanwen’s Tangut dictionary, entry 4479 is glossed in English as “to wait upon.”

The Tangut script was created under the first emperor of Western Xia about 1036 to write Tangut and strengthen a separate state identity alongside Chinese writing. The earliest transmitted example is an official document from 1072.

The Mongol conquest in 1227 ended the Western Xia state, but Tangut writing continued in inscriptions and religious texts; a monument at Baoding dated 1502 is among the latest known examples. The script was shaped by Chinese writing, and possible Khitan influence remains a question in script history. These are script-level connections, not evidence that 𘑏 itself is a Chinese or Khitan character.

Why does 𘑏 appear as a box?

A font without Tangut coverage may show a box. Unicode keeps one character identity, although Tangut sources and fonts can show variant glyph shapes. Missing coverage changes the display, not the dictionary gloss.

For markup or code, HTML uses 𘑏 and JavaScript accepts \u{1844F} as a string escape. These code-point forms do not add a glyph to an ordinary text font; visible rendering still depends on Tangut font coverage.

As of 2026, Tangut work includes scholarship, digital preservation, and type design; this is historical text, not a general-purpose service icon.

Chinese writing influenced Tangut, but this character is Tangut; a Chinese reader cannot be expected to read it as Chinese.

Not just from knowing Chinese. Tangut is a distinct script shaped by Chinese influence, and this character’s gloss comes from a Tangut dictionary.
