What 𘒥 means

To twist strands together. A Tangut dictionary records 𘒥 as a verb.

Is 𘒥 Chinese or Tangut?

It is Tangut writing.

Emperor Li Yuanhao ordered the script in 1036 for Western Xia state-building, likely to support a Tangut Buddhist canon and a distinct identity from Song China. Its forms and structure drew inspiration from Chinese without deriving from it. Khitan precedent also mattered: one of their two scripts was largely Chinese-based.

Khara-Khoto manuscripts preserve Buddhist texts and secular translations; one undated text probably dates to the 12th or early 13th century.

Why does 𘒥 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
