What 𘓟 means
It translates as “trust” or “belief.” A line of Buddhist instruction written in Tangut uses it to urge the reader to develop faith.
Is Tangut writing Chinese?
No. Tangut is a distinct script, though it resembles Chinese writing.
Western Xia formalized it around 1036 to write Tangut, support a Buddhist canon (the collected Buddhist scriptures), and mark its own state identity. Its design drew on Chinese character-making and earlier scripts of the neighboring Khitan kingdom, but it was not derived from Chinese writing.
It carried Buddhist texts, Chinese classics, and other works. A Buddhist monument dated 1502 shows Tangut writing continued long after Western Xia fell.
