Tangut Ideograph 184EC

5357/6136

𘓬 is a Tangut character; its word meaning has to be identified from a Tangut dictionary or the surrounding text. Western Xia’s first emperor had the Tangut script created for official and cultural writing around 1036 CE, and it remained in use under Yuan and Ming rule before becoming obsolete. Its Chinese-like forms belong to a distinct script.

Historical and specialist: it belongs in Tangut texts or discussions of the script.

A box is a display failure: a font or app may lack Tangut support, even while the text still contains 𘓬.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𘓬 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Tangut block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
