Tangut Character 184F7

5368/6136

𘓷 is a Tangut character whose English meaning depends on context. A medieval Western Xia land-sale contract uses it in 𘒣𘓷, a phrase glossed “conditions and circumstances.” Tangut writing began under Western Xia’s first emperor for state-building and Buddhist translation.

What 𘓷 means

It is a Tangut character; its sense depends on the surrounding text.

A 1194 Western Xia land-sale contract uses 𘒣𘓷 as a legal phrase glossed “conditions and circumstances,” literally “a body of speech.” The scholarly transcription of the two-character phrase is da. kwər; that gloss belongs to the phrase, not to 𘓷 alone.

The Tangut script was created around 1036 under Western Xia’s first emperor as part of state-building and Buddhist translation. A Khara-Khoto manuscript fragment probably dates to the 12th or early 13th century. Tangut texts also include official and private legal, Confucian, military, literary, and Buddhist works.

Is 𘓷 Chinese or an emoji?

Neither: it is part of the Tangut script.

Tangut writing can look like Chinese characters, but it is a distinct script, and 𘓷 is not a Han character. By itself, it gives no reliable Chinese reading or emoji reaction; the surrounding Tangut word or source is needed.

Historical Tangut sources preserve variant glyph shapes. A font without Tangut coverage may show a missing-glyph box when rendered; compare the character’s code point before treating a different shape as a different character.

Historical-script material; a lone message needs a source before its intent is clear.

Do not infer a Chinese reading or emoji reaction from its shape.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𘓷 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
