Text symbol

What 𘕉 means

It is a Tangut character glossed as “person.”

A Tangut name study glosses the reading linked to 𘕉 as “person”; that meaning comes from the written record, not from the glyph's shape.

The Tangut script was devised in 1036 for Western Xia state and cultural writing, including official documents, Buddhist translations, and books. This character appears in Wénhǎi, a Tangut rhyming dictionary from the 12th century, at item 72.173; its use is lexical, including in names. Tangut writing continued in later religious and monumental settings, with a known inscription dated 1502.

Why does 𘕉 have different readings?

Scholars spell its reconstructed Tangut reading in different ways.

Li Fanwen's transcription gives wjị¹; another phonetic database gives vi or viq. These are scholarly ways to write a reconstructed Tangut sound, not alternatives a reader can infer from the glyph.

Tangut has its own logographic writing system, with signs for words or word parts. A character's visible components do not reliably reveal its sound or meaning.

Will 𘕉 show as a box?

It may if your app lacks a font with Tangut coverage.

Unicode stores the character; a font supplies its drawn shape. The Tangut chart's reference glyph is not a mandatory design, so typefaces may draw 𘕉 differently.

A blank square means your app cannot display the character with its current font, not that the text value changed.

Historical and specialist: apt in Tangut text, research notes, or font testing; opaque in ordinary chat.

As a generic person picture, it can leave readers with unexplained ancient-script text.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𘕉 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Tangut block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
