What 𘗔 means
The numbered Unicode name identifies a code point, not the word.
In Xun Gong’s 2024 system, its reconstructed reading is dya², a Tangut syllable transcription rather than an English gloss.
Why does Tangut look Chinese?
It borrows design ideas, not Chinese characters or language.
Western Xia (Xixia) ruler Li Yuanhao ordered Tangut writing in 1036 to create Buddhist texts and mark the kingdom’s identity. Its design drew on Chinese writing and scripts of the neighboring Khitan people, but it writes the separate Tangut language.
After Western Xia fell in 1227, Buddhist and secular Tangut texts continued into the Yuan and Ming; the script was obsolete by the end of the Ming dynasty. Historic writing ran in vertical columns, top-to-bottom and right-to-left; Unicode 16.0 describes present practice as horizontal, left-to-right.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𘗔 show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the Tangut block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
