tangut ideograph-18666

Tangut character 18666

5735/6136

𘙦 is a Tangut character, but its Unicode name does not tell you its word or reading. Tangut writing served the Western Xia state and later Buddhist texts; this character needs a Tangut dictionary entry or its passage for a reading. A blank box usually means your font lacks Tangut coverage.

What 𘙦 means

Its Unicode name does not give the Tangut word. The label “Tangut Ideograph-18666” locates the code point; it is not a Tangut word or pronunciation. To identify its reading, look it up in a Tangut dictionary or use the surrounding Tangut text. The glyph alone cannot tell you its meaning.

Why was Tangut writing created?

It let the Western Xia state write in the Tangut language. Western Xia was a medieval state in what is now northwestern China. Created as a state script around 1036–1037, Tangut writing served administration, Buddhist translations, and religious inscriptions. The earliest transmitted example is an official document dated 1072; a stone inscription at the Liangzhou Ganying Pagoda from 1094 shows public monumental use.

Tangut writing continued after the state fell in 1227; a 1502 inscription is a later example. In 1898, Gabriel Devéria proposed a Khitan origin for the script. That historical proposal concerns Tangut writing as a whole; it does not establish a link between 𘙦 and a Khitan character.

Why does 𘙦 show as a blank box?

Your font may not contain Tangut characters. If 𘙦 appears as an empty box, the active font may lack Tangut coverage. A font with Tangut support can display it; the character's identity stays the same.

It reads as historical Tangut text; outside that context, its appearance is a deliberate reference to the script.

Do not treat the Unicode code-point label as the Tangut word.
