As of 2026-09-15, missing Tangut font coverage could leave this character as a box. Fonts can also draw different glyph shapes for the same character.
What does 𘜉 mean in Tangut?
𘜉 is a past Tangut verb form glossed “abandon” or “lose.” Its scholarly reconstruction is written phji², the Stem 2 partner of 𘐩 phjɨ¹ (Stem 1/non-past). The superscript ² marks the reconstructed form; it is not part of the Tangut glyph.
The Tangut script was created around 1036 CE under the first Western Xia emperor to serve the state. A major purpose was producing a Tangut Buddhist canon, a collection of Buddhist scriptures. Tangut writing also carried official, private, and religious texts, including translations from Chinese and Tibetan.
Tangut drew visual principles from Chinese writing and followed an earlier state-script example from the Khitan people, but it is a separate writing system. Manuscripts at Khara-Khoto date to the 12th or early 13th century. Tangut remained in use during the Yuan and Ming dynasties, becoming obsolete by the end of the Ming dynasty.
What does it mean if someone sends 𘜉 alone?
By itself, it has no fixed chat meaning. As of 2026-09-15, no standard emoji or internet reading is documented for this character; ask what Tangut text the sender means if context is missing.
Its Chinese-like appearance reflects script design, not a Mandarin reading. Tangut is a separate script, so the glyph has no automatic Chinese pronunciation.
In ordinary chat, it reads as a historical-language specimen or quotation.
A Chinese-like shape does not give it a Mandarin reading.
