Tangut Character 18726

5927/6136

𘜦 is a character in the Tangut script, a writing system for the Tangut language, and its form matches two historical dictionary entries, so the glyph alone has no single settled English meaning. One entry is associated with “fast”; a 2020 reference note gives the other no known meaning. The script served the Western Xia state and Buddhist texts.

What 𘜦 means

The form is ambiguous in historical lexicons. Tangut is a writing system for the Tangut language. Its character forms draw on Chinese writing, but it is a separate script. The Sea of Writing, a Tangut dictionary, lists this form at 92.162; that is a lookup position, not an English gloss.

Historical entries 2298 and 2299 use the same glyph: one is associated with “fast,” while a 2020 reference note gives the other no known meaning. A scholarly citation can retain the entry number, but 𘜦 alone cannot. As of 2026, Unicode's chart still groups both entries under this glyph.

Where did Tangut writing come from?

It began as state writing for Western Xia. The Tangut script was created around 1036 under the first Western Xia emperor. It served official, private, and religious writing, including books, inscriptions, manuscripts, and sutras. Buddhist translation and printing account for a major part of surviving Tangut texts.

After Western Xia fell to the Mongols, Tangut writing continued under the Yuan and Ming dynasties before becoming obsolete. Modern scholars later deciphered the script, and digital type designers adapt manuscript forms for new fonts.

Why does this glyph disappear?

A blank spot or box usually signals missing font support. As of 2026, fallback fonts can leave 𘜦 blank or show a missing-glyph box; a font with Tangut coverage is needed to draw it. Different fonts may shape the same character differently.

Use a Unicode-aware editor or input method that supports Tangut. Text may be stored correctly even when the chosen font cannot render it.

Don't assign it an English meaning from the inventory label alone.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𘜦 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Tangut block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
