What 𘞫 means
A Tangut dictionary glosses this word as “to rest.” In a longer Tangut passage, grammar and surrounding words can change the best English rendering. Sent alone, it is a fragment from a historical text; context determines its precise translation.
Why does 𘞫 look Chinese?
Tangut echoes Chinese writing visually but remains a separate script.
The script was promulgated around 1036 for the Western Xia state. Its rulers used Tangut for records and ordered Chinese and Buddhist works translated into it. This was a complete writing system built for a language, not a set of decorative symbols.
Tangut’s square characters are built from parts, a design feature also seen in Chinese writing. The script is sometimes compared with the older Khitan script, but resemblance alone does not prove descent from Khitan. A reader familiar with Chinese characters may recognize the visual style without knowing the Tangut word.
It reads as scholarly or typographic, not as an everyday chat symbol.
A Chinese-like shape does not tell you the Tangut word.
