Tangut Character 187C9

6090/6136

What 𘟉 means

“To clear away.”

Li Fanwen’s Tangut dictionary lists 𘟉 as entry 2305 and glosses it “to clear away.” The reading wio is reconstructed, not a guide to modern pronunciation.

Li Yuanhao commissioned the Tangut script in 1036 as part of state-building: it supported a Buddhist canon and an identity distinct from Song China. Tangut books included works translated from Chinese and Tibetan, including Confucian, military, and literary texts alongside Buddhist writings.

Why does 𘟉 look Chinese?

Its structure is Chinese-inspired; its script is Tangut.

Readers familiar with Chinese characters may recognize the brush-built structure, but that does not reveal the Tangut word or reading. Tangut is a separate script with recurring components that scholars use to analyze its characters.

Khitan scripts were a nearby precedent. A Tangut manuscript leaf from Khara-Khoto probably dates to the 12th or early 13th century; that dates the leaf, not this character’s first appearance.

Scholarly, archival, or typographic; its tone comes from Tangut writing or character discussion.

Chinese-inspired structure does not make it a Chinese character.

Questions people ask

3

Is 𘟉 Chinese or Tangut?

Tangut. The script uses Chinese-inspired structure, but it is a separate writing system.

Why does 𘟉 show as a box?

The font lacks a Tangut glyph; the box is a fallback marker, not a variant of the character.

Can you read 𘟉 from its shape?

Not from shape alone. Tangut characters reuse components, but you need knowledge of the script or a dictionary to identify this word’s reading and gloss.
