What 𘟶 means
Its reading is uncertain.
A 2017 Unicode proposal records one occurrence in a movable-type Western Xia book, Collected Writings of the Shining Speech of Three Generations, written by three generations of teachers in the White Cloud Buddhist school and held at the Institute of Oriental Manuscripts.
The same proposal compares 𘟶 with Tangut 𗕮, meaning “to pull” or “to tug,” and says 𘟶 might be a scribal mistake for it. “Pull” is a hypothesis, not a settled translation.
Why was the Tangut script created?
It gave Western Xia a writing system for the Tangut language.
The History of Song, a Chinese chronicle, dates the script's creation to 1036, credits Emperor Li Yuanhao with initiating it, and says his official Yeli Renrong developed the system further. It served state writing, culture, and Buddhist texts.
Tangut, Khitan, and Jurchen were distinct Chinese-influenced scripts used by neighboring states and peoples; their shared regional setting does not make them versions of the same writing system.
Why does it show as a box?
The selected font may lack Tangut coverage.
A font without a Tangut glyph can show an empty box or blank square even though the text is still there. A Tangut-capable font is needed to see the character's shape.
Historical and specialist; an isolated use needs context.
The 2017 proposal's “pull” gloss is tentative; do not treat it as a settled translation.
