Tangut Swallow

8/9

𘴇 is the Tangut character for a swallow, the bird. The Western Xia, a medieval state in northwest China, created Tangut writing in 1036 for official correspondence and state identity; the script later carried Buddhist translations and secular books. Its makers drew on Chinese writing and on the example of their neighbors, the Khitan, who had created scripts of their own. Unicode 13.0 separated this swallow entry from “heaven.”

Text symbol

What 𘴇 means

They are different Tangut words: “swallow” and “heaven.”

A Tangut dictionary lists 𘴇 for the bird. Before Unicode 13.0, the code point for 𘓱 had also covered this rarer entry; the update split the two characters.

That was an encoding correction, not a change to the Tangut word.

1

Why does 𘴇 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
