Tetragram for Difficulties

85/87

𝍔 is the Tai Xuan Jing tetragram for difficulties, a named situation in an ancient Chinese divination classic. A divination result used this four-line sign with the book’s judgments to describe an unfolding situation and possible responses. Today it reads as a specialist reference, so an unexplained message leaves its meaning unclear.

Text symbol

What 𝍔 means

It names a difficult situation in the Tai Xuan Jing.

The Tai Xuan Jing is an ancient Chinese divination classic. In its text, 𝍔 is paired with 難, the Chinese word for “difficulty,” and belongs to a set of 81 four-line signs.

Its opening image is water congealing, earth splitting, and yang—the active force—weak in the abyss. Nine appraisals follow the situation from hidden trouble through reckless movement, inner firmness, obstruction and effort, to an upright escape.

How was 𝍔 used?

It gave a divination result a named situation to interpret.

The Tai Xuan Jing’s first draft was completed in 2 BCE. Yarrow stalks or a six-sided die produced line values; four lines with three possible states formed a tetragram, which readers interpreted with the book’s judgments.

The system extends the older Yijing, or Book of Changes. Yijing signs use six lines with two states, while Tai Xuan signs use four lines with three—heaven, earth, and human. The traditions share a divination purpose, but their sign systems are distinct.

What does it mean if someone sends 𝍔?

Read it as a reference to a Tai Xuan sign.

If the message discusses the Tai Xuan Jing, Chinese classics, or divination, 𝍔 points to the named difficulties sign. In general chat, it may be an obscure reference or decoration; ask the sender what they mean before treating it as a personal message.

“Difficulties” is only the broad gloss: the classical passage adds timing, restraint, and response. A reader unfamiliar with the text needs that context to understand why this exact tetragram was sent.

Specialist and bookish; in general chat, it reads as an intentional reference with no obvious meaning.

By itself, it gives too little context to tell whether the sender means the classical sign or something personal.
