What 󠅫 means
By itself, it has no meaning; its role depends on its neighbor.
Variation selectors were designed to preserve glyph choices in plain text, where font choice or rich formatting would not travel with the text. Early proposals focused on Han characters, whose historical and regional glyph collections did not share one universal classification. The Ideographic Variation Database lets separate collections register exact character-selector pairs, so the number 124 does not name one fixed style.
When a base-selector pair is undefined or unsupported, the selector is ignored and the base keeps its ordinary appearance. This is why the mark can be present in text while nothing visible changes.

Questions people ask
1Why does 󠅫 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
