variation selector-236

Variation Selector-236

Variation Selector-236 is an invisible text mark that requests a particular glyph form of the character before it, when that base-plus-selector sequence is registered and supported. It belongs to the supplementary selectors used for CJK ideographic variation sequences, not a standalone symbol, emoji, or formatting switch. Sent alone, or after an unsupported base, it normally leaves no visible trace.

What 󠇛 means

It requests a supported glyph variant for the preceding character.

Variation Selector-236 has no fixed picture or standalone message. Its job is to follow a base character inside a variation sequence. For a registered CJK ideographic variation sequence, the pair can preserve a specific glyph form in plain text even when ordinary font choice is not enough. The character's meaning stays the same; the requested drawing becomes more precise.

Design proposals from 1997 already describe this mechanism as plane-14 selectors for registered ideographic glyph collections, not as a standalone cultural sign. The reason was practical: historical and geographic traditions can draw the same Han character differently, while scholars, governments, and publishers may need different accepted forms. The base character, selector, and registered collection together determine the result, so VS236 has no universal visual command.

Why is Variation Selector-236 invisible?

Because a selector is not a standalone visible character.

Unicode marks variation selectors as default ignorable. If the exact base-plus-selector sequence is unregistered or the renderer lacks its glyph data, the base normally displays as usual and the selector disappears. That is a fallback, not a missing emoji or an empty space.

Do not use VS236 as a general style switch. It does not mean bold, italics, color, or a private meaning by itself; even the same selector can request different glyph restrictions after different bases. The documented system evolved from variation-collection proposals into the registered Ideographic Variation Database, where each valid sequence gets its own defined glyphic subset.

How should I type or send it?

Use it only after a known base character in a registered sequence.

If you know the target sequence, enter the mark with a Unicode-aware hexadecimal input method as E01DB, immediately after the base. In HTML source, the numeric reference 󠇛 inserts the mark. The palette above is safer when you need the exact character without memorizing an input method.

If you do not have a specific registered CJK variant to preserve, leave it out. A recipient may retain the invisible code point while seeing no difference, and a font without the requested glyph can fall back to the base form.

Technical and invisible; it belongs in text infrastructure, not casual conversation.

Sent alone, it looks like nothing; do not treat silence as a hidden word.

What it means when someone sends it to you

4 readings
Sent by itself
No readable message; most conforming renderers ignore it.
After a Han character in a registered IVS
Requests that character's registered glyph form.
After a base with no registered pair
No sanctioned visual change; the base normally stays unchanged.
Copied into plain text without font support
The selector may survive invisibly while the base glyph stays ordinary.

Questions people ask

2

Why is it blank after I paste it?

Expected: it is a selector, not a standalone visible symbol. Unless it follows a supported base in a registered variation sequence, a renderer normally leaves the base unchanged and ignores the selector.

Can I use it for bold or italics?

No. Variation selectors are not a general text-formatting tool; Unicode excludes span-wide effects such as bold and italics. Use your editor's formatting controls instead.
